CALIFORNIA COACHES ASSOCIATION
History
March 29, 1961 ... - St. Mary's College
On January 13, 1957, six Bay-Area coaches gathered together for the purpose of organizing agroup to continue the basketball coaches clinic, which at that time,
Was held in conjunction with the Tournament of Champions. Those present at this,
and the meetings immediately to follow were former members of the now defunct tournament clinic Committee. This committee was dissolved by action of the T of C
administrators on December of 1956, and out of necessity the continuation of this
clinic became the sole responsibility of the coaches themselves.
Two weeks later on .January 26, 1957 a Committee of twelve assembled namely for the purpose of making plans for the forthcoming tournament clinic. However, soon after arrival the group decided then and there to organize a state-wide coaches association. It was at this meeting that the name California Coaches Association was decided upon and Orrin Qualls was elected acting President and Harlan Carter Secretary-Treasurer.
Although for the first time in California a state coaches association came into being for all active Jjunior High, High School, and Junior College coaches of all
Interscholastic sports, the important task of electing permanent officers, appointing a
Board of Managers and drafting a constitution was yet to be accomplished.
The first general meeting March 9th, 1957 at the Shattuck Hotel with 250 coaches
in attendance, the group unanimously approved the name, aims and objectives of tbe California Coaches Association and the active officers. During the following year 19S8-1959, the constitution was prepared and presented for approval at the general meeting held on March 15, 1959 at the Shattuck Hotel. At this meeting. and according to the constitution the following slate of officers was unanimously approved.
President, Orrin Qualls .. First Vice-President, Harlan Carter - Second Vice-President, Bert Robinson - Secretary, Bill Rockwell and Treasurer, Ed Hopkins.
By virtue of the fact that tbe California Coaches' Association originated out of
a group of basketball coaches and which out of necessity at the time rallied around a basketball tournament presented the most important task yet to be encountered by this young, all-sports organization.
The ultimate success of this state-wide coaches association was dependent on membership of all coaches of all interscholastic sports with complete and equal participation in the organization throughout the entire state. To accomplish this
end, coaches of all sports were enlisted and presently all sports are actively re-presented throughout the association.
In 1961 at the annual convention and clinic was the first effort the associa-tion has made to include a complete all-sports program. A program which has been especially designed for you and one from which all should benefit.
The California Coaches Association is the only state-wide coaches association
that is designed for and by coaches. This is your association and the success and
benefits derived tbere-from is the responsibility of every coach. The C.C.A. is not a closed corporation, there is no executive secretary, dues are at an absolute minimum, the organization is completely democratic in nature and is constantly seek-ing aid from any member who may be interested to assist in the administration of the
association, as well as in the many activities which the association sponsors each
year.
