Dan Fukushima Lifetime Achievement Award
: Dan Fukushima was a member of Cal Coaches for 40 years (past-president and Hall-
of-Fame). Dan was the CCA representative to the Federated Council for 25 years. He coached
basketball at James Lick HS and Independence HS - both in San Jose. The gymnasium at Independence
is named in his honor. As an American-born son of Japanese immigrants, Dan was recognized as the
first Nisei to coach a California high school basketball team. He conducted clinics in Japan, USA, and
the World University Games. He taught English and Journalism. While coaching, he NEVER received
a technical foul. George "Bud" Presley - longtime coach at Menlo College says "Dan Fukushima has
done more for high school basketball than any man alive."
Dan passed away in 1998.
